Biography

A prolific African-American actor/writer/producer/director who, along with his popular character "Madea" (who he plays on-stage and in film), has almost single-handedly revived urban theater, New Orleans-born theater Renaissance man Tyler Perry was thrust into the spotlight following the runaway success of his stage play-turned-film Diary of a Mad Black Woman — which held the number one spot at the box office when released into movie theaters in February 2006. Inspired to channel his creativity through writing by popular television-show host-turned-actress Oprah Winfrey in 1992, Perry put pen to paper as a means of working out the childhood pains that still lingered. His first production, entitled I Know I've Been Changed, hit the stage to rapturous reviews in 1997, and following a collaboration with Bishop T.D. Jakes that resulted in Woman, Thou Art Loosed and Behind Closed Doors, Perry once again flew solo to create cantankerous 68-year-old grandmother Mabel "Madea" Simmons in I Dan Do Bad All by Myself in 2000. A slew of Madea-based projects were quick to follow, and shortly thereafter Perry would be joined by Grammy award winner Kelly Price for the play Why Did I Get Married? His plays seen by countless fans thanks to Perry's trademark practice of releasing them on home video, Perry would return to feature filmmaking again in 2007 for the romantic comedy Daddy's Little Girls.
