Biography
Character actor Kurtwood Smith was educated at Stanford University, then worked briefly as a drama teacher before distinguished himself on the San Francisco theatrical circuit. Making his first fleeting film appearance in Roadie, Smith toiled away in quiet, mild-manner roles until finding his niche in oily villainy as the drug lord in Robocop (1987). The actor was at his all-time nastiest as Mr. Perry, the ultra-judgmental father who drives his sensitive son (Robert Sean Leonard) to suicide in Dead Poet's Society (1989). More character roles followed over the next decade until Smith found fame as Red, the comedically tough dad in the sitcom That '70s Show.

"Kurtwood" is his real first name. According to an interview with Smith on Caroline Rhea's syndicated television show (4/8/), his mother was a fan of a country singer named Kurt (or Curt) in the early '40s. However, she thought "Kurt Smith" was too short a name, so she added "wood" -- "she just tacked it on to the end," said Smith. He noted that he's likely the only Kurtwood.
His son, who goes by the stage name Dr. Sauce, hosted a radio show at Stanford University in the mid-to-late 1990s and played guitar in a band called The Vulcaneers.
Presented actress Barbara Bain with the California Lottery's "Hero in Education" Award on "The Big Spin" show on December 18, 2004.

Tends to play well meaning but stubbornly misguided characters, like Mr. Perry in "Dead Poet's Society" and the Captain-Nemo-like alien Annorax in Star Trek: Voyager.
Won the role of Red Foreman on That 70s Show (1998) when the original choice, Chuck Norris, was unavailable due to his commitment to filming Walker, Texas Ranger.
