Biography

With an impressive string of internationally acclaimed features, Yugoslavian filmmaker Emir Kusturica became one of the most creative directors in cinema during the 1980s and '90s. Born in Sarajevo and educated at the distinguished FAMU Academy of Performing Arts in Prague, he began directing Yugoslavian television shows before making an auspicious feature-film debut in 1981 with Do You Remember Dolly Bell?, which won the prestigious Golden Lion at that year's Venice Film Festival. His sophomore film, When Father Was Away on Business (1985), earned a Golden Palm at Cannes, five Yugoslavian Oscar equivalents, and was nominated for an American Academy award for Best Foreign Film. In 1989, he earned even more accolades for Time of the Gypsies a penetrating but magical look into gypsy culture and the exploitation of their youths. Kusturica continued to make highly regarded films into the next decade, including his American debut, the absurdist comedy Arizona Dream (1993) and the Golden Palm-winning black comedy Underground (1995). In 1998, he won the Venice Film Festival's Silver Lion for Best Direction for Black Cat, White Cat, an outrageous, farcical comedy set in a Gypsy settlement on the banks of the Danube.Known as much for his political activism as his filmmaking in his native country, Kusturica spoke out against the Serbian right/ultranationalist movement on many occasions. He once challenged the leader of Serbia's ultranationalist movement, Vojislav Seselj, to a high-noon duel in the heart of Belgrade. Seselj declined, saying that he "didn't want to be accused of [the] murder of an artist."

1986 -1988 played bass guitar in "Zabranjeno Pusenje", a rock band from his hometown Sarajevo.
In 1993, he challenged Vojislav Seselj, leader of Serbia's ultranationalist movement, to a duel. He suggested that it should be in the heart of Belgrade, at high noon (!), with any weapon Mr. Seselj chooses. Vojislav Seselj refused this offer saying that he "didn't want to be accused of a murder of an artist".
In 1995. Kusturica knocked down (during the FEST - Belgrade's International Film Festival) Mr. Nebojsa Pajkic leader of New Serbian Right movement. Symbolicaly enough, Mrs. Pajkic tried to protect her husband by hitting Kusturica with the small bag, a present from Radovan Karadzic, leader of Bosnian Serbs.
Acording to Swedish paper Dagens Nyheter 28 January, 2001, Emir Kusturica and Zabranjeno Pusenje recently had a gig in Moscow.
Since 1986 he plays bass guitar in "Zabranjeno Pusenje" (also known as "The No Smoking Orchestra"), a rock band from his hometown Sarajevo. In 1989 the band and its members moved to Belgrad. Super 8 Stories (2001) is a domcumentary about "No Smoking".
Since 1986 Emir Kusturica has played the bass for the Yugoslav Gipsy -Techno-Rock band "No Smoking". Soon before the Balkan war broke out in the early 1990s, band leader Nele Karajilic moved to Belgrade and in 1994 formed a new band with younger musicians, including Stribor Kusturica, Emir Kusturica's son, on drums. In 1998 the "No Smoking" composed the music for Emir Kusturica's film "Black Cat, White Cat," which won the Silver Lion at the Venice Film Festival of that year. In 1999 "No Smoking" recorded a new album "Unza Unza Time", produced by the Universal record company, as well as a video clip for MTV and Video Music, directed by Emir Kusturica himself.
