Biography
Tony-winning American stage and film actor Edward Herrmann used his Fulbright scholarship to study at London's Academy of Music and Dramatic Art; several years of regional theatre led to movie and TV work. In 1977 Herrmann offered the first of his many interpretations of Franklin D. Roosevelt in the TV movie Eleanor and Franklin (He'd later be a singing FDR in the theatrical feature Annie [1982]). The actor was frequently dissatisfied with his own performances, feeling that with a little more time he could do much better. Such was the case of his portrayal of baseball great Lou Gehrig in the TV drama A Love Affair: The Eleanor and Lou Gehrig Story (1979), though Herrmann was proud of the fact that he learned to pitch and bat southpaw, something that a previous movie Gehrig, Gary Cooper, never quite mastered. His occasional villainous movie appearances notwithstanding, Edward Herrmann is to most viewers the very embodiment of intelligence and integrity; he was decidedly well cast as the erudite host of several historical documentaries on the Arts and Entertainment Cable Network.
Member of the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity at Bucknell university.
He loves restoring classic cars. He has several in his collection.
He grew up in the Detroit area, studied drama in England at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (on a Fullbright Fellowship no less) and performed in several repertory stage productions in the Dallas area early in his career.
He has completed many voiceover assignments: from Dodge TV commercials, to documentaries to dozens of audiobooks (in many cases, using different accents and dialects).
Won Broadway's 1976 Tony Award as Best Actor (Featured Role - Play) for George Bernard Shaw's "Mrs. Warren's Profession." Was also Tony-nominated in 1983 as Best Actor (Play) for "Plenty."
Won his Tony the same year that Kelly Bishop - who portrays his wife in Gilmore Girls - won hers.
He has played Franklin Roosevelt three times in Eleanor and Frankin (TV)(1976), Eleanor and Franklin: The White House Years (TV)(1977) and Annie (1982). In 2005, he hosted the documentary about Roosevelt called FDR: A Presidency Revealed.
In 1999, he hosted a program on The History Channel, "History's Lost and Found" which chronicles the whereabouts of history's best known artifacts. Since that time Herrmann has hosted (or narrated) dozens of History Channel specials mostly about historical figures like Benjamin Franklin, Theodore Roosevelt and FDR.
